The different types of additional signs
Often, under a ZCR (Zone à circulation restreinte) sign an additional sign can be found. This additional sign – which can often be seen in different variations – often displays the Crit’Air vignette colors (categories) that are allowed to drive in the ZCR environmental zone located behind the sign.
Additional signs can also refer to trucks, buses, private cars, light vehicles and motorcycles. In each case, the respective vehicles types are displayed on the sign. In the case illustrated here, the additional sign is addressed at light utility vehicles and trucks, which are allowed to drive in the zone from Monday to Friday between 6am and 7pm with one of the 6 vignettes displayed.
There are nonetheless older vehicles which, despite being light or heavy utility vehicles with a first date of registration prior to 01.01.1997, will not receive a french anti-pollution sticker. In the example below, these vehicles will not be allowed to drive in the environmental zone from Monday to Friday from 6am to 7pm.
The old additional signs
In many other cases, old additional signs can be found which only show a simple version of the traffic restriction.
These simpler additional signs – which can be found under ZCR-signs since September 1, 2015 – have so far had the meaning that no truck or bus with a weight of more than 3.5 tons or more of “category 1” could drive in the ZCR zone between 8am and 8pm.
In France, “category 1” refers to vehicles the emission levels of which are so high that they are not allowed to drive in any environmental zone between 8am and 8pm.
This also affects all vehicles over 3.5 tons that have not received a vignette. The prohibition to drive is always valid in relation to the times indicated on the sign.
For old busses M2 and M3 under 3.5 tons as well as trucks N2 and N3 under 3.5 tons, the prohibition to drive is applicable from Monday till Sunday, as long as they were registered before October 1, 2001.
It is crucial to understand that all additional signs located under a ZCR entry-prohibition sign are always based on the decision of each local administration. The days of the week are thus sometimes not given on the additional sign. In these cases, the days of the week can then be found in written form at the respective city administration.
